Meeting Minutes May 21, 2019

Memorial Day - May 27th, 2019

ON MEMORIAL DAY WE REMEMBER
ALL WHO HAVE DIED  SERVING
IN THE AMERICAN ARMED FORCES.

The Pledge of Allegiance

Jennie – Residents’ Health Concerns

1. The June calendars are on the table at the back of the Hall as are the signup sheets for the June events. Some events have a maximum so don’t wait too long to sign up. (Two mistake on the calendar - Biscuits and Gravy are on the 12th, not the 13th! Please change your calendar and Tower Burger on the 11th. We need to be at Tower Burger at 4:30 PM, not 5 PM.)

2. We have another addition to the weekly activities. On Thursdays from 1 to 3 PM in the Outback, a group of us will be gathering to make cards or scrapbook. This is not a class. Bring our own supplies and come join us.

3. We discussed spending some of our money on an ice cream freezer for the kitchen but one was donated by Chuck Raymond so, we don’t need to spend money on this. Thanks much, Chuck! Based on our prior discussions, I think we might want to put off spending any money until the end of the summer season. Can I have a vote on that. It was agreed to wait until the end of the season.

4. On Thursday, May 23rd, we will be going to Louie’s Back Yard for dinner at 6:30 PM. I talked to them about the fireworks and they are not having them at least not on Louie’s dock as advertised. Apparently, it was the city that advertised it and I don’t know when or why they changed their minds. I have called in the reservations for this already but if some of you don’t want to go because there aren’t any fireworks, let me know. A couple of you already told me they would not stay that late. We can ride share to Louie’s. Just arrive at the Hall at 4:45 PM and we will leave for South Padre at 5:00 PM.

5. On Monday the 27th, we will be celebrating Memorial Day.  11 AM is the Happy Hour, 11:45 AM Invocation and Noonish is the Potluck. Hamburgers and Hotdogs will be provided.  Thanks to Adrian and Josie for hosting this party and to all their helpers.

6. On May 29th from 1 to 3 PM, Kristi Collier (Welcome Home RGV) will be hosting an Ice Cream Social with live music outdoors. If it is too warm, Vicky has said that we will bring it inside.

7. On June 6th there is a potluck scheduled for 5 PM with a Happy Hour at 4 PM. No need to sign up for this. Just bring your own table service and a dish to share with 6 to 8 people.

8. We have two Ice Cream Socials planned in June thanks to Jennie and her crew. The one on the 9th will be Root Beer Floats for $1 and the one on the 23rd will be Banana Splits for $2. Please do not bring any bills higher than $5 because it is difficult to make change.

9. I have planned two meal outings. One on the 11th which will be at Tower Burger in Alamo. It is sort of a fast food restaurant although the food is fabulous. We thought you might want to check it out. Lee and I get the Fungus Among Us Burger and the Onion Straws and split it. You will get enough to eat, we can assure you of that. The signup sheet is in the back. We picked the 4:30 PM time because we talked to the Manager and he said between 2 and 4:30 is the best time. We are limited to 25 on this outing so don’t wait to long to sign up. We will meet in the Hall at 4 PM for ride-sharing and leave at 4:10 PM for Tower Burger in Alamo.

The other is dinner at Milano’s Italian Restaurant here in Weslaco. This is more up-scale but you can spend what you feel comfortable with. They have excellent pizzas and great Italian dishes on the menu. If you haven’t ever been there, this is another great place to try. Sign up at the back of the Hall.

10. Father’s Day: Jennie and Roxanne are the Hosts for Father’s Day. They will be serving a dinner at 1 PM. The dinner is free but please sign up at the back of the hall so we have enough food for everyone. The meal will consist of a roasted one-half chicken, potato salad, baked beans and pie for dessert. The meal is free – please sign up at the back of the Hall. Thank you, Jenny and Roxanne for hosting!

11. We also have one breakfast on the calendar which will be on Thursday the 13th of June. This was put on the calendar on Friday, please change your calendar. It will be Biscuits and Gravy for $2. Thank Jennie again for agreeing to do a bit more than what she is already doing in June.

12. Vicky will be doing another Pour Paint Art Class on the 12th of June at 2 PM. This class is limited to 15 so sign up as soon as you can. We had a great time doing the last one. The cost is $5. After the meeting Vicky said that she may need to raise the price to $8 especially if we want to use a larger canvas. The paints alone though cost more than the $5. She will let us know.

13. We now have hosts for the whole season.
Memorial Day hosts are Adrian and Josie Zepeda.
Father’s Day is Jennie Draper, Sondra Plowman and Roxanne          Schnicker
Independence Day is Peggy and Phil Marszal
Summer Party is Vicki Wilt and Mary Lukkes
Labor Day is Mary Lou Salmons and Donna Longworth
Grandparent’s Day is Zane Handley and Roy Heinlen
Halloween:  Lee and I will host Halloween again this year                with a bit of help from our friends.

Let’s give them all a big round of applause as a Thank You!

14. I have a suggestion for Halloween this season. What would you think of having the party on the 30th so that anyone that helps with handing out candy to the children could attend the party. Halloween is on the 31st which is a Thursday so the party would be on a Wednesday night. The group agreed to the change.

15. I am going to step down as the Activity Director for the summer. I have an appointment with a heart doctor on the 31st to check out my heart. If he says I am okay for surgery and I’m pretty sure he will, Dr. Six will do my back surgery shortly. Then, hopefully, we will be able to go back to Iowa to see family this summer for a couple months.

Thankfully, we have a new Activity Director for the summer. Peggy Marszal  will be taking over for me. She will step down from the Treasurer position and Vicki Wilt will take over that position. Give them both your thanks when you see them!

16. Our next meeting is on June 4th. Neither Peggy or I are available that day so Harold Zimmerman will lead the meeting. Peggy will get with him prior to the meeting.

17. If any of you have ideas for July, give Peggy a call.

OTHER BUSINESS:

Please do not turn off the large coffee urns in front of the kitchen. These need to stay on.

We had a discussion on whether or not to charge for meals again. The motion was made that we not charge. The majority of the people voted that we should charge for the meals and those that sign up and do not show up will be billed. We need to be more conscientious about this because it is hard for the people planning and doing the meals to have enough food for everyone and we certainly don’t want to end up with way too much food.

Vickie Wilt said that watering the flowers is a lot bigger job than she imagined. She is getting a group of people together to help get it done. She would love some more volunteers. Someone else mentioned that new flowers were put out in front of the Outback and that they were drooping already. It was again brought up that the solution would be to have a watering system. Vickie said that there was a watering system at one time but that the sprinkler heads don’t work. She has put in a Work Order to get them fixed. That would take care of the plants in the front of the Hall. We still have plants by the Bocce Ball Courts and in front of the Outback that need to be watered.
